Figure/Ground
Individual Project | Fall 2017 | Design I
This project exercises introductory composition skills through the exploration of figure and ground. Simple compositions are iterated so underlying hierarchy and relationships emerge. Then plane and frame relationships are extracted which can be used to create or contain a programmatic volume.
In this study sides, edges, and composition are further developed to form a four-sided rectangular prism with voids. Inside this is a more stereotomic volume which intends to provide an abstract space where an occupant would hypothetically navigate by crawling, walking, and squeezing their way through to an upper “meditation” space.
