Figure/Ground/Program
Individual Project | Fall 2017 | Design I
Various plane and frame compositions can infer programmatic potential such as introverted, extroverted, public, or private. This project chooses to explore the connection between composition and programmatic characteristics by beginning with a study of three perpendicular tubes.
Program and circulation emerge from these iterations of perpendicular relationships which inform the planer composition, coverage of each tube, and positioning on a hypothetical site. The framing system for the tubes remains consistent except when providing extra support around apertures and thresholds. For this project, the two horizontal tubes represent a personal space either public or private while the vertical tube is intended for group occupation and views to the site.
These characteristics are also apparent in the programmatic masses and their position on the tube. The more introverted space hangs secluded and on the underside of one horizontal tube. In contrast, the extroverted private programmatic mass hangs on the top side.
