Blocked Textile
Individual Project | Spring 2019 | Construction II
The found book entitled “Block Island” by Feng Guo shows 8” x 9” explorations of framing, blocking, the juxtaposition of minimalism, and acrylic paint, to conceal and abstract the image below. These techniques are the same ones used to inspire the “Blocked Textile.”
The textile begins with a familiar graphic (an image from the public domain, much like those of the book). Principles of masking used in the book are then applied to the layering of the textile images. Through digital layering and iteration, the graphic is slowly obscured. Similar blocking is also inspired by Feng Guo’s work which helps maintain a level of clarity in contrast with the curvilinear graphic. The textile takes into account the contrasting colors used in Guo’s work which is essential in furthering the desired abstraction.
