After the eruption of ash and pumice, the mouth of a volcano collapses and forms a caldera. This crater ultimately results in a tantalizing, mineral-rich environment where explosions of steam and lava can continue thousands of years after the initial eruption.
This project seeks to explore the nature of these hearty ecosystems specifically through the exploration of the Numi tile, by Konstantin Grcic, which inspired the development of an undulating gridded topography that separates and filters the user into the unknown and completely interior areas of the bath house itself. The second system of organic Corian structures hangs above the topography which defines more organic and ergonomic spaces of occupation.
With varying degrees of matte and glossy surfaces, use of a light wall, and the embracing of steam and water elements, the project intends to create a unique and almost volcanic, otherworldly experience.
